Selbstparodie

for piano trio

Selbstparodie, meaning “self-parody” in German, is an attempt to chronicle the many feelings of anxiety and self-doubt that I often encountered while composing. I began writing this piece last year as a freshman in Donald Crockett’s composition course. With an assignment to compose a theme and variations, I realized how well my personal narrative would work in the context of the form. I view the opening melodic material as a character representing myself. Each variation narrates a different stage in which I react to and lose myself in the world of being a student composer.
